Chinese company Huawei Technologies has unveiled a new 7 inch tablet, the MediaPad that will hit the shelves some time during the third quarter. This Android based device will eventually be joined by a 10 inch big brother, with Huawei making big plans to be among the top five handset manufacturers worldwide in 3 years. Huawei Technologies are already one of the world’s biggest suppliers of telecommunications equipment, second only behind Ericsson. Huawei Device is a division of Huawei Technologies, involved in the manufacture of cell phones, smartphones, and tablet PCs.
The 7 inch tablet is being called the MediaPad, and will use a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor. The tablet will be based on Android and will come with a number of pre-installed applications. In a recent interview with Reuters, Victor Xu, the chief marketing officer behind Huawei Device said “We are also developing a 10-inch tablet…We hope to launch it this year.” Huawei already compete with Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks, and ZTE Corp in global network hardware, and they obviously want to push into the mobile devices sector.
Xu has big plans for Huawei over the next few years, saying “We believe we can enter into the top five vendors in the global handset market over the next three years.”While Apple, Samsung, and Nokia are probably not getting too worried just yet, Huawei do have the hardware pedigree to make these plans a reality. Their Android focused vision is different to that of China’s no. 2 network equipment maker, ZTE, who are going down a different route. They have plans to launch smartphones based on Microsoft’s Mango operating system, with the first devices being launched in the United States early in 2012.
